The elk is a member of the deer family with a rich and legendary cultural history. In 1865, it was introduced overseas by the French missionary Father David (1826-1900). Its evolution is almost in sync with humans. It was regarded as a symbol of vitality and was housed in the royal hunting gardens in ancient times. A century ago, the elk suffered from floods and wars and became extinct in China. In 1985, the species returned to China and Nanhaizi established the elk park, a conservation research site. The garden is a vivid manifestation of the great achievements of China's ecological efforts and biodiversity conservation in Daxing.
