Beijing's Daxing district launched an international hydrogen energy demonstration zone on Dec 25 to help build a city cluster for fuel cell vehicle (FCV) development.

The initiative, put forward by Beijing, covers seven districts of the capital city, the Binhai New Area of Tianjin, Baoding and Tangshan cities of Hebei, Binzhou and Zibo of Shandong. It is designed to harness the strength of local leading firms to foster an economically manageable model.

It was stressed that hydrogen, one of most clean and efficient sources of secondary energy, will bring new opportunities, as China is committed to peaking its carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.

The conference released several documents to promote the FCV city cluster. In addition, five people were named as distinguished experts for the initiative, including Li Yadong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Jianqiu, dean of the School of Vehicle and Mobility at Tsinghua University, and Jin Qinxian, president of Beijing Tsinghua Industrial R&D Institute.

Three months ago, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region was added to a list of China's first group of demonstration city clusters for FCVs by the National Development and Reform Commission and several other central authorities.

The region boasts a complementary industrial layout and natural advantages. It will make full use of Beijing's strengths in technological innovation and incubation, promote the coordinated development of all industrial chains and facilitate cross-scenario application of technologies in a move to accelerate synergetic development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.

In this context, a community of green energy with a shared future will be welcomed, ensuring sustainable growth of hydrogen industries and elevating them to a new height.
